Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Secretary Jossey Buthane and three others spent the weekend behind bars after allegedly instigating public violence at the Mogalakwena Platinum Mine where ongoing protest action turned violent last Friday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto informed that Buthane and three other suspects are facing a charge of instigating public violence.
“The four appeared in the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed until 30 September. They were released on free bail,” Otto said.
According to information Buthane and the other three, whose names Otto could not be provide, arrived on the scene outside the mine as protesters were about to disperse.
Violence allegedly erupted again soon after their arrival.
Buthane also faces a charge of common assault after a student from the University of Limpopo was allegedly hit on the head with a wooden object early in August while Buthane and fellow EFF members were present on the Turfloop campus. Buthane admitted to have been on the premises at the time of the purported incident but denied any involvement in the matter.
He appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court where he was given free bail and warned to appear again on 23 September.
