Town pools still closed – no answer from muni

The swimming season started last Tuesday, yet the three public swimming pools in the city, Nirvana, Westenburg and Polokwane central, are still closed.

POLOKWANE – The swimming season has started, yet the three public swimming pools in the city, Nirvana, Westenburg and Polokwane central, are still closed.

Until now the municipality have not communicated the reasons why the public swimming pools are closed or when they will open for the season.

In August this year Matshidiso Mothapo, municipal spokesperson, said that the municipality was preparing all the swimming pools to be ready for operation by the beginning of the swimming season.

“The only area where a delay may be experienced is at the Polokwane central swimming pool.

“However, work has begun in earnest to ensure that all the necessary work is done and the pool is ready for the season.”

On Friday, Review visited the Westenburg swimming pool and a security guard explained that the swimming pool is closed because they are still busy cleaning the pool.

This is also the case at the Nirvana swimming pool.

Pools closed early

Earlier this year the pools were closed in March, two months earlier than usual.

At the time, the municipality said the Nirvana and Westenburg swimming pools were in need of boosters and other pumps.

Seasonal tickets

When the pools do open, residents have the option of buying a season ticket, which costs R268.

This ticket is valid from 1 September until 30 April next year.

Residents who do not wish to buy a season ticket, can still enjoy a splash in one of the public swimming pools at R11 per session.
