Smoking gun: weapons treasure trove in Nirvana

Several rifles, ammunition, projectiles and a machine to reload empty cartridges were confiscated by police in Nirvana on Thursday evening.

POLOKWANE – Several rifles, ammunition, projectiles and a machine to reload empty cartridges were confiscated on Thursday evening reports the police on Friday morning.

“Members of the Westenburg police station followed up information about suspected goods locked up in a room of an abandoned house in the Nirvana area on Thursday,” explains provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto.

In the search police confiscated 3 AK 47 rifles, four magazines and 345 rounds of live ammunition; 1 R1 rifle and two magazines and 1 038 rounds of live ammunition. They also found 47 900x 9mm projectiles, 69 x 38 Special rounds as well as several other rounds of ammunition for different calibre fire arms. Also found was a machine used to reload empty cartridges, a bullet proof vest and several bags filled with a white substance.

“Forensic tests will be conducted to determine whether the powder might be drugs while the fire arms will be taken for ballistic tests to determine whether they have been used in the commission of a crime.”

Investigations continue, said Otto.
