R2m in diamonds and gold seized at border: suspects to remain in custody

The estimated value of all suspected diamonds is R2,263,501 and the estimated value of the suspected gold is R17,497.

LIMPOPO – Over R2 million of rough diamonds and gold was found at the Beitbridge border post when a goods truck from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was inspected reported the Citizen on Wednesday.

The seized “suspected” metals and gems included: 143.35g of gold‚ 63.54g of black diamonds‚ 67.58g of diamonds‚ 173.10g of uncut industrial diamonds‚ 10.36g of clear uncut diamonds and 566.87g of industrial diamonds.

According to the report the estimated value of all suspected diamonds is R2,263,501 and the estimated value of the suspected gold is R17,497.

The suspected stones were handed over to the SA Police Service and the suspects were taken into custody.

“The DRC nationals appeared in the Musina Magistrates court on Friday(today),” provincial police spokesperson , Col Ronel Otto.

The case has been remanded to 10 September and the suspects will remain in custody concluded Otto.
