Young artists work will been seen by thousands

Ryan's artwork will appear in the 2016 Sanlam Calender.

LOUIS TRICHARDT – Ryan Gilbert (12), a learner of the Ridgeway Independent College and an artist of the Kidzart School in Louis Trichardt is one of the 13 winners whose artwork will appear in the 2016 Sanlam Calender with his artwork titled: I saw the Birchalar in his epic flight.

“I had no idea I was going to win, but I have done it and I am proud of everyone that gave me the opportunity,” Ryan said with a smile.

Mariza Joubert, Kidzart, teacher explains; “Ryan drew inspiration for his artwork out of creating an imaginary animal from the features of all different kinds of creature groups.”

“He created an imaginary environment where this ‘animal’ could live. He made the name up himself and pretended to have seen this rare species of creature.”

Oil pastel was used as medium, which gives a mystic feeling to the artwork. “I think he created a fun and creative imaginary picture making good use of the media he used.

Santam’s Child Art project

Santam’s Child Art project aims to instill a love for art in children by giving them a platform to creatively express their ideas. Child Art also runs an annual art competition to seek out 13 winners from various regions in the country. The winning artworks are then selected to appear in Santam’s annual calendar.

This year, Santam received more than 4 000 entries from across the nation. The theme for this year’s competition was: A Place of Dreams.

“It was very interesting to see how far and wide the children could go when imagining their dreams,” says Tersia Mdunge, Santam, Corporate Social Investment Manager.
