Toddler takes her last breath

Her parents were told to take her home on August 29 because there was no longer any space for her at the hospital.

POLOKWANE – The death of a toddler who allegedly died after being turned away by nurses at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital must be investigated said Langa Bodlani (MPL) DA in a statement on Thursday.

The DA has written to the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba to urgently investigate the matter – the reason for this was that there was not enough space to accommodate her.”

According the statement, the toddler was initially admitted at Mankweng Hospital for two months but was transferred to the Pietersburg provincial hospital because her condition worsened.

Her parents were told to take her home on August 29 because there was no longer any space for her at the hospital.

“They were given three oxygen cylinders but the nurses failed to give instructions on how to use them. On 31 August the toddler passed away.”

“The paramedics who were called to help her before her death, allegedly indicated that the parents were given wrong cylinders and that could be the reason why the toddler died.”

“This gross negligence which could have been avoided led to the death of a toddler.”

This calls for an urgent investigation by the MEC and the DA will also open a criminal investigation for the negligent causing of the death of this toddler said Bodlani.

Our hospitals must be places where our people get medical help and not to be turned away by the nurses when they are desperately in need of help concluded Bodlani.
