Mogalakwena mine CEO urges employees to return to work

“Your safety is our highest priority and it is at the top of my agenda, I urge you to come back to work.”

LIMPOPO – “Your safety is our highest priority and it is at the top of my agenda, I urge you to come back to work.”

This was the plea of Richard Cox, the CEO of the Mogalakwena Platinum Mine during a meeting at Kameeldoring Golf Club on Thursday, which was attended by more than 300 mine workers.

The meeting follows protest action by residents from five villages surrounding the mine, who have blocked off the entrance to the mine since early Monday morning with burning tyres and rocks in an attempt to raise their concerns.

Some of the mine workers went back to work on Wednesday morning after the Mogalakwena mine management had a meeting on Tuesday evening with the Ga-Molekana leadership, where their demands were tabled.

“The company acknowledges the demands and will work with the community leadership to address the issues tabled within seven working days,” read a statement by the mine.

A truck was set alight on Thursday morning on the N11.

During the meeting, the mine workers received an opportunity to raise their concerns.

“At the moment we rely on the presence of the police to ensure our safety when we drive to and from the mine and we believe that this situation would be resolved peacefully. We want to strengthen our ties with the community and I emphasize the fact that  every employee’s safety is our highest priority,” Cox concluded.

Const Sello Leso, spokesperson of the Mahwelereng police said no further incidents have been reported and that the N11 was open.

“Drivers should please be alert when driving on the N11,” he concluded.
