Aid for girls to stay in school during periods

The SABC's Thobela FM radio station, in conjunction with the Mogalakwena Municipality, wrapped up Women's Month by donating sanitary towels to 56 learners at Gwenane High School in Sekgakgapheng last Thursday.

LIMPOPO – The SABC’s Thobela FM radio station, in conjunction with the Mogalakwena Municipality, wrapped up Women’s Month by donating sanitary towels to 56 learners at Gwenane High School in Sekgakgapheng last Thursday.

Thobela FM Station Manager, Moshongwa Matsena, said the sanitary towels will help learners for six months. She explained the station’s footprint comprises mostly rural areas where a lack of necessities within communities still exists. According to her there are still impoverished girls who often miss school during their menstruation cycles, due to lack of sanitary pads.

“Thobela FM is always striving to bring about social change in the community by supporting the poor and vulnerable rural and urban communities through employment. The station aims to encourage business people as well as ordinary communities at large to form part of the sanitary towel campaign,” Matsena said.

Mogalakwena Councillor, Thabiso Montane, said they appreciate the efforts and role played by Thobela FM for ensuring that girls have access to much-needed sanitary towels. He said it will make girls stay in school and get education in dignity.

“We are aware that most impoverished girls miss school days due to menstruation hygiene challenges. Some of the girls end up using unhygienic materials such as cloths, newspapers, grass and plastic as alternatives. What you have done here today is indeed remarkable,” he concluded.
