EFF man faces 30 charges of assault

EFF Provincial Secretary, Jossey Buthane, faces a charge of common assault after he allegedly hit a student at the University of Limpopo with a stick

POLOKWANE – EFF Provincial Secretary, Jossey Buthane, faces a charge of common assault after he allegedly hit a student at the University of Limpopo with a stick.

Col Ronél Otto, Provincial Police Spokesperson, confirmed that no arrest has been made yet and that the matter is still being investigated.
“Once we are done with our investigations the docket will be sent to court for a decision,” Otto said.

According to Buthane there are 30 cases of common assault against him. He explained how this came about: “the EFF Student Commander asked the provincial leadership to help them with their efforts to address student issues at the University of Limpopo. I was requested by the provincial leadership to assist in this matter and that is why I was at the university,” Buthane said.

He said the university management had already started addressing these issues when members of the ANC, DA and PAC student wings at the university interfered.

“This caused an argument between the EFF and other student wings. I intervened and the situation was calm. Shortly after I left I was informed that 30 cases of common assault were opened against me and that I was accused of hitting the students with a stick.

“Now, if I was using an object to hit someone the charge against me would not be common assault, but a case of assault with the intention of causing grievous bodily harm.”
