Members of Motswikitswiki, a community group that fights against crime in Mankweng and surrounds, marched to the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday) to witness the court appearance of George Mehlape who allegedly sells the dangerous and highly addictive street drug, nyaope to school children in the area.
Mokibane Dikgale, Secretary of Motswikitswiki said members of the organisation assisted the Mankweng Police to arrest Mehlape on 10 August after concerned parents informed that he was the supplier of the substance in the area.
“We were told that he operates in the Ga-Montintane area and that he sold the substance to learners at Mountain View High School and Ditlalemeso Secondary School. The revelation did not sit well with us because the substance destroys the lives of the learners who use it. We did our own investigations as a community group. Together with the Police we went to a place where he operated and we found the substance there. This man is 53 years old and sells this dangerous drug to little children. Why can he not deal it to people of his own age? He is a disgrace to the community. People like him should be helping us to deal with this problem,” Dikgale said.
Mehlape appeared on charges of possession of dagga, nyaope and dangerous weapons. His case was postponed to 30 October for further investigations.
