POLOKWANE – Learners of Mitchell House showcased their impeccable public speaking skills night at the school’s Best Speakers Competition and Slam Poetry Night on Thursday.

The Best Speakers Competition, which was adjudicated by Claude Goeminne and Jack Holloway, was split into two categories, juniors and seniors. Topics ranged from Test marks don’t matter to Keep your Mum off Facebook! which seemed to be a crowd favourite.

Others included Beauty in Society, Guys Gossip more than Girls as well as the topic of whether stealing for your family isn’t always a bad thing, which gave an insightful look into poverty when often the only means of surviving is theft.

The two winners of the evening were Rithik Samuel (junior category) who spoke about how test marks don’t matter in determining your success and KK Mametja (senior category) who spoke brilliantly about how clothing doesn’t define who you are.

The evening then progressed to the Slam Poetry which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was also split into two categories for juniors and seniors.

The students spoke with passion, maturity and emotion which was acknowledged by the cheers from the audience.

Poems ranged from Pen and Paper, No Eraser, Afrotastic as well as a brilliant piece on birds being a metaphor for women.

The poets were judged based on style, delivery and content.

Third place went to Lesedi Kekana (junior category), Michael Muchopa (senior category) took second place and KK Mametja scooped her second first place award for the night with her poem on procrastination.
