Children drag unconscious man to safety

Last Thursday children helped an unconscious man onto the pavement after finding him lying in the middle of the road close to the school they attend.

POLOKWANE – Last Thursday children found a man lying in the middle of the road near the intersection at Landdros Maré and Potgieter Avenue, close to the school they attend. They managed to drag him to safety onto the sidewalk.

Review investigated after receiving an anonymous call in this regard.

The man was still lying on the sidewalk, seemingly lifeless.

While checking for any signs of life, it was discovered that the man was still but seemed to be under the influence of an unknown substance. The police were contacted and on arrival, the man was revived enough to answer their questions. He said he had sniffed glue and then passed out. The police took the man to a place of safety, according to an official.

Dangers of substance abuse

“Sniffing glue is a common occurrence in the city and in some cases people  lose consciousness from its effects,” said Amanda Swanepoel speaking on behalf of South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) Far North.

“Common household products such as nail polish contain solvents that can be concentrated and inhaled to produce intoxication.”

“Misuse of products in this fashion can be harmful and even fatal. These people, often children, need to get help as soon as possible.”

She encouraged all people to report anyone seen inhaling substances not manufactured for this purpose.

The SANCA Far North centre is situated at 33 Church Street and can be contacted at (015) 291 5985 or send an e-mail to amanda@fnda.co.za
