Don’t fall for this scam warns police

This cellphone scam targets mainly the school children in town.

POLOKWANE -Police in the city warn residents against the latest cellphone selling scam.

The scam is targeted mainly at school children in town. Two men usually approach children in the street, they show them the phone and let let them test it to make sure it works (it does not appear to be blocked).

They then negotiate a price – the victims are conned into believing they get one of the latest cellphones at a bargain price when in fact it is a stolen dummy phone used in shops.

“Dummy phones are made to look like real phones and they feel real too,” shop assistant in a local cellular shop.

Polokwane police spokesperson, capt Ntobeng Phala, said the public should refrain from buying any goods on the street and rather make use of a known cellular dealer to buy a phone.

He asked victims to report the incidents, and urged people with information on the two men to report it to the police station or use the different crime lines for anonymous tips to help the police track them down.
He warned that dummy phones are also for sale on the internet.
