More than 200 chess players from all over the province attended the chess tournament hosted at Northern Academy Primary School on Saturday.
The tournament was hosted by the Capricorn district and was also the last qualifier for children hoping to participate in the SA Schools Chess Championships in Cape Town, to be held from 3 to 7 January next year. According to Frans Badenhorst, Treasurer of Capricorn School Chess, who has been involved in arranging chess tournaments in the province for the last 33 years, chess is good for concentration and strategic thinking and improves creative thinking and problem solving. He said he would advise all children to take up chess as a hobby or on a more serious level.
He informed that nine children from the province were invited to the SA Closed Chess Championships in Pretoria in April of whom five or six attended.
