Young man (18) murdered

An 18-year-old boy appeared before the Seshego magistrate's court on Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed Thabo "Zina" Mokgohloa to death in the early hours of Sunday in Moletjie, Ga-Ramphele.

POLOKWANE – An 18-year-old boy appeared before the Seshego magistrate’s court on Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed Thabo “Zina” Mokgohloa to death in the early hours of Sunday in Moletjie, Ga-Ramphele.

The police arrested two people linked to the case, but one suspect could not appear in court since he is still a minor. He was taken to Bosasa correctional facility for assessment.

Mokgohloa was part of a local brass band known as Matsaka brass band. He led the band to the Union Buildings in 2013 during the Freedom Day celebrations attended by the then South African president, Jacob Zuma. According to his mother, Elizabeth, it is alleged that the group was hired to kill her son since he is well known for his magnificent dance moves in the community.

“My son has been with the band for ten years now and was regarded as the lead player. We heard that the group was paid to kill my son, but we do not know why. We are still in mourning, but we believe the law will take its course and punish whoever was involved,” said the grieving mother.

She added that Mokgohloa was on his way to see his daughter and wife as he had just returned from a ceremony were he and the band entertained the guests.

She said they had high hopes for his bright future, but all the dreams and wishes were now dashed.

It is alleged that Mokgohloa was stabbed several times on the upper body. He was rushed to a local clinic for treatment where he later died of his injuries.

Matsaka Mohlaloga, the band manager, said they were inconsolable.

“I have known Zina for many years, he was a very good boy. He was the lead in the band and he is the one who taught most of our boys how to play.

“We are saddened by his death and we will remember him everyday,” said Mohlaloga.

Spokesperson for the Seshego police station, Const Mothemane Malefo, confirmed the incident. He said the two suspects were taken for questioning following which they were linked to the incident.

They appeared before the magistrate charged with a case of murder.

He added that the case was postponed to August 20.

Pending further investigation, the suspect remains in custody.

Mokgohloa will be laid to rest on Sunday at Ralema cemetery in Ga-Ramphele.
