7 arrested for robbing, abducting hitchhikers

A tip-off from a former victim led to the arrest of seven suspects for armed robbery in Musina

LIMPOPO – A tip-off from a former victim led to the arrest of seven suspects for armed robbery on Wednesday morning in Musina.

The  group allegedly picks up hitchhikers on the N1, robs them of their belongings and dumps them next to the road, said provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto in a statement.

A former victim of the group spotted the suspects along the road and followed them to Musina and called the police.

“Four men and one woman were arrested and a minibus taxi was confiscated at their overnight accommodation.

During follow up investigations, two more suspects were arrested and a sedan was confiscated,” said Otto.

“Indications are that the suspects can be linked to several cases of armed robbery along the N1, especially on foreign victims.

“Investigations to link them to cases of abduction of people along the border and demanding money for their release are also ongoing.”

The seven suspects will appear before the Musina magistrate’s court on Thursday (today) on the charge of armed robbery.
