POLOKWANE – BEING able to feed his family from what he earns as a Polokwane-based street vendor selling kebabs is very important to Benard Yusufu (40), who is originally from Malawi.

The father of five had lived in Polokwane for two years but could not find a job. “After I realised that I was not going to find a job, I decided to start a business. I knew if I did I would be able to earn some money instead of just walking the streets doing nothing and perhaps even becoming involved in criminal activities to earn money,” he explained.

Yusufu said his business had been going for a year and he was happy about how much it had grown. “Customers always appreciate my food and I am grateful to them for being loyal to me since I started selling. With the income I generate, I am able to buy groceries for my family and we don’t go to bed hungry,” Yusufu said.

“My customers always praise my kebabs and they often queue for a long time just to buy them. They always encourage me not to give up on my business as it has huge growth potential.

He said although his business was still small, he dreamt of running a big business with which he could generate enough income to enable him to create jobs for the local unemployed youths.
