The Police have warned that strict security measures will be implemented and followed at the Polokwane High Court when Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema is expected to appear in connection with cases of fraud, corruption and racketeering on Monday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said the Police will monitor and patrol the area in and around the court as well as the city centre and identified areas in Seshego.
“Security will also be tight at the Jack Botes Hall where a night vigil will be held by Malema supporters from 18:00 on Sunday as well as the motorcade and march into the city centre on Monday. Our aim is to ensure peace and stability. No lawlessness will be tolerated and those who break the law will be arrested immediately,” Otto said.
Streets to be closed as of Sunday evening are Schoeman Street from Thabo Mbeki Street to Bodenstein Street; Landdros Maré Street from Thabo Mbeki Street to Bodenstein Street; and Hans van Rensburg Street from Thabo Mbeki Street to Bodenstein Street. The intersection at Bodenstein and Market streets will also be closed.
“The case is set for trial but as we have no indication on how long court proceedings might take, we will give a daily update on when the roads will be opened again,” Otto said.
Only a limited number of people will be allowed into the court room. Security control at the court entrance will be enforced by a private security company as well as members of the Police. No dangerous weapons, such as fire-arms, knives, pangas or knobkerries will be allowed at the court premises as well as surrounding areas.
“We request the public to cooperate with the Police, traffic officials and security guards deployed to perform their duties to ensure a peaceful environment,” Otto said.
