Part of the PHS family

Lucas Mulaudzi has been a security guard at Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) since 2006.

POLOKWANE – Being a security guard at a school is not strange for Lucas Mulaudzi, and is in fact something he is very proud of, he says.

Mulaudzi has been a security guard at Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) since 2006. Before that, he was a guard at a shopping centre in the city.

For Mulaudzi, working at the school means he is part of the PHS family.

“These children respect me for the person I am. They know they can phone me when they have a problem and I will be there,” says Mulaudzi.

He says he has not yet come across any serious problems at the school and is thankful for that, but will not hesitate to assist in any matter possible.

He adds that his work mostly entails monitoring the vehicles that visit the school during school hours and school functions.

“I feel that security guards at schools are more appreciated then normal security guards. Being a guard and looking after someone’s property means that there is very little thanks and appreciation and that you only get feedback on the work you do when you have done something wrong. This is not the case at all at the school,” he says.

Mulaudzi says the personnel and school children sometimes bring him something to eat or something warm to wear when it is cold.

He says even though his wife and children stay in Venda, he has been fortunate to find a room to rent close to the school.

He further says when a fire broke out where he stayed a few years ago and he lost everything, the parents, learners and teachers all assisted him to replace the things he lost in the fire.

Mulaudzi advises the learners to keep going to school.

“Be all you can be and realise that being in school means that you give yourself a chance that other people may not have and is part of preparing for the future,” he said.
