2 800 former cops want to re-enlist

The SA Police Service received 2 800 applications from former officers who wanted to re-enlist.

NATIONAL – The SA Police Service received 2 800 applications from former officers who wanted to re-enlist says a report on IOL.

“Since this plan was announced two months ago, the SAPS has received 2 800 applications from former police officers by the closing date of 15 June 2015,” Spokesman Brigadier Vish Naidoo said in a statement on Monday.

“Of the 2800 applications, about 1000 were from former detectives.”

“From these applications the SAPS aims to appoint former constables, sergeants, warrant officers and lieutenants to posts in the detective service and visible policing divisions, the two environments within the SAPS that need capacity.”

Applicants who left the service while a disciplinary matter was pending against them would not be considered says Brig Naidoo in the statement.

“Those with criminal records will not be considered at all. We will not compromise quality for quantity. Only those with a commendable track record of good performance and a clean disciplinary record will be re-enlisted,” said national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega.

The applicants would be vetted and their fingerprints checked to ensure that none of them have criminal records.

Naidoo said re-enlistment boards will be convened in all provinces with representation from police headquarters to consider applications and make final recommendations to a human resources committee for consideration.

The plan was to finalise the process by the end of November, he said.
