Cops in dark for months

Working conditions at the police vehicle investigation services (VIS) unit in Seshego are so poor that there are no working toilets for the male employees.

POLOKWANE – Working conditions at the police vehicle investigation services (VIS) unit in Seshego are so poor that there are no working toilets for the male employees.
The employees, who spoke to Review on condition of anonymity, said there were a lot of problems at the VIS offices, which they had reported to management, but nothing was being done.
“We have been without water for more than two months. The toilets are not working and we have to ask neighbouring businesses if we can use their toilets when we need to relieve ourselves. Since August there have been no lights in the passages. The passages are very dark and the only light is the sunlight shining through the windows from offices in the passage when the office doors are open,” the employees explained.
They added that the power outlets at the offices were also not working.
“The plugs in management’s office work and a few plugs for our computers, but the others are not working. We asked why but do not get any response,” one employee said.
According to the employees there are also several water leaks on the premises, which are not being repaired.
“The municipality came to our offices more than a month ago and dug up holes to see where the leaks are, but they never repaired the problem. The holes are still open and there are dams of water where they made the holes. There is a hole at the entrance of the VIS offices, another hole next to the administration block close to management’s offices and another one next to the employees offices,” the employees said.
Col Ronel Otto, provincial police spokesperson, said the police were renting the building and the owner of the building has been alerted about the conditions at the premises.
“He is appointing a contractor to do the necessary renovations,” Otto said.
