POLOKWANE – “Young people are capable when aroused of bringing down the towers of oppression and raising the banners of freedom”.

This was one of many valuable quotes by Nelson Mandela, whose birthday will be celebrated this month. Two 16-year-old boys, Max Tshabalala and Jabulani Mavuso ascribe to this saying, and recently launched their clothing brand, Empire with the hope that it would inspire young people to dream more and then try to realise those dreams.

Since its launch a few months ago, the name Empire has been doing the rounds in local social and entertainment circles. Some musicians including Khuli Chana and Riky Rick have acknowledged the brand. Gr. 10 learners from Capricorn High School said the brand proved how young people were excelling in the business world. The brand was launched with some T-shirts, jerseys and caps specifically aimed at young people.

According to Max, their clothing label served as an inspiration to unite young people. “I see myself dressing celebrities in the near future,” he said.

“Our parents have been pillars of strength, they give us support and motivate us to never give up,” he further said.

Jabulani said the brand and its design represented young vibrant people who strove for success and embraced life and lived it to the full.

“I am feeling positive and I know we will go far with this brand. I’m happy we can design the type of clothing we like,” he says.

They both said not having a supplier was their biggest challenge. They also mentioned that their new clothing brand was available in Polokwane and Pretoria. “We still focus on our schoolwork and don’t let this distract us. We concentrate on the clothing business during weekends and holidays because we know without education we won’t go anywhere,” Max added.

They concluded by saying they dreamt of opening their own store one day.
