2 dead, 60 injured in Limpopo crash

At least 60 people were injured and two killed when a bus and a bakkie collided on the R528 George’s Valley between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg on Sunday afternoon.

LIMPOPO – At least 60 people were injured and two killed when a bus and a bakkie collided on the R528 George’s Valley between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg on Sunday afternoon.

“Paramedics found people standing around a bus wedged against the Armco barrier and a Hard body (bakkie) with severe damage,” said Werner Vermaak, ER24 Spokesperson in a statement.

“Upon assessment they found that three people in the bakkie were still trapped. A woman and a girl (believed to be 16 years old) were found with serious injuries.

“A man and a boy (believed to be eight years old) was found dead.”

Local fire and rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life to free the bakkie’s occupants and the two survivors were stabilised on the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The local provincial emergency services dispatched a disaster bus to the scene and loaded the occupants from the bus.

“Fortunately none of them sustained any serious injuries. They were all treated for minor injuries,” said the spokesperson.

The cause of the collision was being investigated. The R528 in the vicinity of the collision was closed for several hours while medical and rescue services attended the incident.
