Madiba remembered 21 years after democracy

Express asked residents what they remembered about Nelson Mandela 21 years after democracy.

LIMPOPO – JULY 18 is Mandela Day, a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact.

On this day, South Africans are urged to open their hearts and lend a much needed hand to the less fortunate in their communities.

Express asked residents what they remembered about Nelson Mandela 21 years after democracy.

Tumelo Bosula said Mandela was a strong man who loved children and his people.

“He was really inspiring and my role model. I will always remember him as someone who stood up for what he believed was right. He was my hero.”

Riselda Moloto.
Riselda Moloto.

Riselda Moloto said Mandela gave the people of South Africa freedom and he left a great legacy.

“He was a good leader and a great freedom fighter who loved his people.

“He brought equality to all South Africans regardless of their gender or race.”

Nita Rikhotso.
Nita Rikhotso.

Nita Rikhotso said he would never forget Mandela as he played a huge role in his life.

“He really means a lot to me. He was a man of peace and a great man who deserves all the respect. He also created a new South Africa for all as everyone is now equal.”

“Mandela was the father of South Africa and Africa, without him, South Africa will not be the same.

“He was determined to protect African rights and he has successfully done it. He was a man of peace and I have a lot of respect for him.

“We must celebrate him everyday and I believe as a nation, we are all proud of what he did for us,” said Paulinah Maepa.

Noko Moloto.

Noko Moloto said as a young girl who had the right to free education, she enjoyed every moment of her life and she would not forget Mandela.

“We receive free books, food and education at schools because of Mandela.

“We no longer have boundaries as we go to schools of our choice. Every month we receive the child grant and with the money we are able to buy ourselves food. Mandela will always remain my father and my hero.”

Thamatios Mphogo.

Thamatios Mphogo agreed with Noko that Mandela would always remain the father of the nation.

“We are now walking free without any discrimination because of his power. He has set a good example to our current leaders and with his spirit, we can move the country forward. We are now brothers and sisters who live in peace. We will always love Mandela.”
