LIMPOPO – WHEN the long-awaited and demanded municipality in Malamulele comes into being, the legacy of deceased public service and administration minister, Collins Chabane will continue to live through the municipality being named after him.

Following a decade of fighting to have their own municipality, the people of Malamulele have finally been granted their wish to have their own municipality.

This follows after a series of chaotic protests and shutdowns in the trouble-torn area. Last Friday, however, Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) chairperson, Jane Thupana, announced that a new municipality would be established in the Vhembe district.

Moments after the announcement of the granting of a new municipality, the people of Malamulele exploded into ululation, singing and dancing.

Local residents have since expressed their wishes that the new municipality should be named after Chabane, who died in a horrific car crash on March 15 together with his protectors, Sgts Lawrence Lentsoane and Lesiba Sekele, while on their way to Pretoria from Polokwane.

Resident Jones Shikwambani said he also supported the suggestion that the municipality should be called ‘Collins Chabane’. “Naming our local municipality after him will be a way of thanking him for what he did for the people of South Africa,” he said.
