POLOKWANE – ABRAHAM Masipa (63) from Mmotong, is a parolee and says prison was tough.

Masipa spoke during a recent visit by the Polokwane Correctional Services, where parolees were monitored to check they complied with their parole conditions.

“I am trying by all means to educate young people that crime doesn’t pay. Some of them listen, but some don’t. I learned my lesson during my sentence, where I spent 25 years in prison for murder and arson. Prison life is hard,” said Masipa.

The father of three said he learned bead work during his prison term.

“I am struggling to find a job and I appeal to the community to assist me with a job,” he said.

Polokwane area commissioner, Kenneth Mthombeni, said 23 parolees were visited during the monitoring visits.

“We pay them surprise visits to ensure they are complying with the law,” said Mthombeni.

Nthabiseng Molwantwa, National Institute for Crime Prevention and Re-integration of Offenders (Nicro) area manger, said they urged correctional services to take care of parolees. “If parolees are monitored, they can play a good role in the community and help to stop crime,” said Molwantwa.
