Hypertufa, art that soothes her soul

A few years ago a tragic incident led Anne Oliver to start a hobby that brings peace to her soul.

POLOKWANE – A few years ago a tragic incident led Anne Oliver to start a hobby that brings peace to her soul.

“I used to live in Polokwane, but was attacked in my home so I moved away to be with my sister in Durban. There I stumbled upon a product called Hypertufa. My sister used blocks to paint on and I made her stencils. I had to move back to Polokwane when tragedy struck yet again when one of my sons passed away. Here I started working with Hypertufa on a larger scale,” said Anne. She says that although the product looks like cement it is much lighter and ozone friendly.

“I am big on landscaping and wanted a product I could manufacture myself. Hypertufa is cement mixed with any kind of organic material, be it leaves or paper. I experimented with adjusting the recipe because Polokwane’s weather differs greatly from that of Durban. I am also big into recycling and very aware of my carbon footprint. I make molds from milk cartons or margarine tubs.”

Although you need to wear gloves and a mask whilst working with the product, it is easy to use, even children could use it for projects. She says that it is one of the cheaper ways to make a personalised gift. Once it is cast, you can carve it the next day, you are also able to paint it, customising it even further.

“I found that working with Hypertufa is a healing tool for me, something to help me find my feet and self-worth again,” she said.

Anne’s business is called Sister Act to honor the fact that her sister supported her and helped her discover Hypertufa. Her products are available at two nurseries in the city.
