MOKOPANE – TEACHERS at Sunrise Primary School took a step back in time last Friday as they dressed up in school uniforms and packed their suitcases full of books to celebrate Youth Day.

They celebrated the 36 years since the 1976 generation in Soweto came together to protest against the Apartheid-run education system, which segregated students on the basis of their ethnicity. Various activities including talk shows were held to educate the learners about the rich history of democracy in South Africa and all of the sacrifices that were made.

“As we celebrated Youth Day, which is on June 16, we wished that we could rewind time and sit among our friends in the school class again, but this time in the era of democracy,” said Kubs Kubiku, science teacher at Sunrise Primary School.

“Celebrate your youth today and cherish your tomorrow”, was the message that the teachers conveyed to the learners. The youth of today are privileged as they enjoy the fruits of a democratic South Africa and it is their responsibility to use the opportunities they have today, because the future of this country is in their hands.”
