Today our nation celebrates Youth Day: Soweto student’s uprising of June 16, 1976. The student-led protests in Soweto – known as the Soweto Uprising – claimed about 23 lives in Soweto alone on the day of the march. The protests began in Soweto schools and spread across the country. The unrest was a response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction.

The Unity Secondary iSchoolAfrica Youth Press Team compiled a YouTube video about the history behind South Africa’s Youth Day commemoration of the June 16 Soweto 1976 uprising.
