Residents angry over wedding in the park

Some residents in Flora Park are angry with the municipality for allowing a wedding to be held at a municipal park in McDonald Street last Saturday.

POLOKWANE – Some residents in Flora Park are angry with the municipality for allowing a wedding to be held at a municipal park in McDonald Street last Saturday. The residents claimed that the municipality had not consulted with them before approving the event at the park.

“We did not know about the wedding, we only saw people erecting a tent in the park and later guests arrived. There were about 300 guests who attended the wedding. There were only two mobile toilets for the guests to use, some of the male guests used our fences as toilets,” one of the residents said.

Another resident added that the wedding ended just after 20:00. “The municipality only sent someone to come and clean the park on Monday morning. There were also a lot of empty liquor bottles among the rubbish. So does this mean the municipality promotes public drinking, because they approved the wedding in a public park?” residents asked.

Matshidiso Mothapo, a municipal spokesperson, confirmed that the park was booked and paid for, for a wedding on Saturday. According to Mothapo, before the municipality grants permission for any event, there are certain forms that need approval from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“Residents are not consulted by the municipality when our parks are booked. It is the responsibility of the applicant to seek community consent. The municipality does not condone public drinking at parks, but the issue of controlling public drinking remains the competence of SAPS,” Mothapo said.
