Gr. 12 learners become mine workers for a day

MOKOPANE – MORE than 20 girls from six secondary schools were given the chance to see what a day in the life of an Ivanplats employee was like as part of Cell C’s Take a Girl Child to Work Day campaign last Thursday.

Since the launch of this campaign in 2003, more than 2 400 companies and government departments have participated. By showing their support of Cell C’s call to action for the advancement of women, 670 000 girl learners have been exposed to a multitude of businesses and varied career and job opportunities.

Learners from Ben Hlongwane, Somavhunga, Gobela, Lekwa, Ntata and Kgaba Secondary Schools visited the Ivanplats offices in town and donned full personal protective equipment for a visit to the Shaft 1 area.

The girls were inspired by talks from employees of various designations in the new mining company, with the same message affirming that they too can become mine workers.

“Ivanplats is committed to making a difference in our host committees and by joining this initiative hopes to change the perception in girls’ minds that mining is a career for men.

“The initiative was also aimed at showing the girls that all they need to do is dream big and work towards their dreams,” stated Ivanplats in a media statement.
