POLOKWANE – To raise awareness of the rights of children the Polokwane Child and Family Care Society together with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drugs Dependence (Sanca) held a puppet show at two local schools last week.

Good Hope Primary and Nirvana Primary Schools were the two schools visited.

The aim of the puppet show was to inform children about the effects of alcohol on their bodies and behaviour, as well as the effect of smoking. Learners heard about the appropriate uses of medicine. The puppet show was also held to encourage the use of appropriate alternatives. This initiative was part of the National Child Protection celebration.

There were three characters in the puppet show and they were:

• Lollipop – an ordinary girl.

• Tinnman – a boy experimenting with substances.

• Wizzer – the wise wizard.

After the puppet show there was a discussion with the children on different emotions, which included; anger, sadness, fear and happiness. This exercise was important that learners understand they must not keep their emotions inside, but to talk to someone so that they can feel better.
