Vryburgers donate to Pathways

"We care for the community and that is why we decided to give to Pathways," says Aggie Ströh, president of Vryburgers.

POLOKWANE – In October 1998 Pathways Polokwane was established after an overwhelming demand for a place to cater for the needs of children with not only physical but also cognitive disabilities. At first it was based at the Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church and as their relationship with Mitchell House was very good from the beginning, they relocated with Mitchell House to the new premises.

Pathways is a non-profit Section 21 Company and as Pathways was allocated an area of land, the Pathways Management Committee, parents and staff began planning fundraising events to raise money for the building of the Enrichment Centre.

After almost two years of strategic planning and fundraising, our dream became a reality. The learners were included into Mitchell House Preparatory School and on Monday, July 17, 2006, the learners arrived, proudly dressed in their blue and green uniforms.

Time tables throughout the school have been adapted to accommodate a more structured inclusion programme based on each child’s individual education plan.

Discussions with each class, from gr. 000 to gr. 12 are held and it has been extremely inspiring to hear the view points and opinions the children have regarding inclusion and various disabilities.

“There are 24 learners. For every eight learners there are four teachers,” says Renate Wieferring, the junior class teacher.

In 2014 Vryburgers had a wine auction, raising money for different organisations in the city.

On Monday, June 1, they donated a cheque to Pathways to help them out with equipment they need.

“We care for the community and that is why we decided to give to Pathways,” says Aggie Ströh, president of Vryburgers.

Renate says that there is a wishlist that they will attend to. “Half of our learners are here on bursaries.”
