The box was blown up on the last date of submission of tendering documents for the National Schools Nutrition (NSN) Programme. The tender, opened last month was supposed to close today and allow the process to continue to its end, getting needy learners food in schools.

According to police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, at 23:00 last night a charcoal Mercedez-Benz entered the department parking lot. Unknown men deposited documents in the tender box and within minutes of leaving the box exploded. Nothing was reported to have been taken but all tender documents in the box were ripped and scattered.

The department condemns this incident and sees it as a step backward towards the provision of this important programme to needy learners in the Province. The matter has been referred to the South African Police Services (SAPS) for further investigation.

No arrests have yet been made.
