Problem solvers, inspired thinkers

POLOKWANE – LEARNERS from different schools in the Capricorn region illustrated their dream careers during a Women in Engineering career awareness campaign that not only proved to be educational but also a lot of fun.

The campaign was themed Ignite the Light for Future Engineers and was held at Capricorn FET College in Polokwane recently.

According to Women in Engineering marketing and media coordinator, Mologadi Letsoalo, the main aim was to increase the number of females in the engineering field. “We aim to reach about 250 girls in Limpopo. As a disadvantaged province, we are reaching out to these girls so that they can be our future engineers. We want them to be better problem solvers and inspired thinkers. We have reached out to many schools so far and will continue to do so. We also plan to establish ourselves in other African countries,” Letsoalo said.

Dipou Nthane, a gr. 12 learner at Taxila Secondary School, said her main reason for attending was to find out more about civil engineering. “I am interested in civil engineering. I was having a difficult time deciding whether to study engineering or medicine. I got a lot of information regarding civil engineering and it was worth it. It was very empowering, especially to us young girls, because of the perception that engineering is a field for men,” Dipou said. Kealeboga Maja, a gr. 12 learner at Northern Academy said medicine was one of her options. “I’ve learned that chemical engineering is not about one field, it has different fields. I can work in the mine as an electrical engineer. As young women we should not limit ourselves to society rules, but must learn to know and accomplish our dreams without fears,” said Maja.
