Disabled mother still stays in this shack

A WHEELCHAIR-bound mother of two from Siloam village still lives in a shack although she applied for an RDP house during former president Thabo Mbeki's tenure.

LIMPOPO – A WHEELCHAIR-bound mother of two from Siloam village still lives in a shack although she applied for an RDP house during former president Thabo Mbeki’s tenure. Johana Muthahuyini Chauke (73) shares the shack with her two children and five siblings.

She said her husband passed away in 2011 and the family relied on Chauke’s social grant for survival.

“We sometimes struggle to buy food because my grant is not enough to feed the family. We haven’t received a response from the municipality on when they are going to build a house for us,” said Chauke.

DA councillor, Albert Mafhala, said the Makhado Municipality allocated more than R90 million to housing.

“This incident is again compounded by the R559 million that was sent back to the national treasury by the department of cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs (Coghsta) due to underspending.

As a result, 9 259 poor families on the RDP waiting list will have to wait for yet another financial year before receiving houses,” Mafhala said.

Spokesperson for Coghsta, Selomo Mutupa, said they would investigate why she was left out when others received RDP houses.
