5000 Medupi workers return to work

More than 5000 striking workers at Eskom’s Medupi plant have returned to work after a two month long strike.

LIMPOPO – (The Citizen) More than 5000 striking workers at Eskom’s Medupi plant have returned to work after a two month long strike.

About 21 000 workers, who are employed by contractors, embarked on an unprotected strike on March 25.

According to Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe,out of the 8000 unionised workers on site, on average 5000 have been allowed back at work amid an audit that is being conducted to find out who has been part of an illegal march that took place at the site.

Last Friday, the North Gauteng High Court ruled in favour of Eskom for the eviction of all persons residing in all three of Eskom’s accommodation areas around the Medupi power station, as well as interdicting the return of these employees back to the accommodation areas.

Numsa, which had appealed the eviction order, was ordered to pay Eskom’s legal costs.

Construction has resumed on five other units at Medupi power station,  the power utility confirmed on Tuesday.
