Police fight rape with campaign

LIMPOPO – FOLLOWING an increase in the rate of crime in the six policing areas that fall under the Tzaneen police cluster, the police in the area would haveĀ  started yesterday (Wednesday) with their anti-rape outreach programme in various communities.

The campaign started on May 5 and will continue until June 18.

According to Tzaneen cluster spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, they had experienced a high rate of crime, mostly affecting minors.

The cases included murder, attempted murder, missing children, rape and kidnapping.

Ngoepe said the modus operandi of the incidents differed, and it had been uncovered that parents, especially mothers who stayed with the children, had a common tendency to leave them unattended.

“They leave kids sleeping and their rooms not locked, making it easy for the criminals to break in and rape or kidnap them,” Ngoepe said.

During the campaign, there would be build-up activities such as visits to tribal authorities, schools, churches and other public centres.

In Tzaneen, the event will take place today, on May 20 in Bolobedu, on May 29 in Letsitele, on June 6 in Maake, on June 11 in Modjadjiskloof and on June 18 in Ritavi.

Ngoepe added that the speakers would include the provincial police commissioner, Genl Fannie Masemola and other senior police officers in the Tzaneen cluster, social workers, pastors and members of Community Policing Forums.
