Indian centre streets a mess, say shopkeepers

" We are sick and tired of the condition our streets are in," a shopkeeper, who do not wish to be identified, told Review.

POLOKWANE – Shopkeepers at the Indian Centre in Excelsior Street say they are at their wit’s end over the dilapidated state of the streets in the area.

” We are sick and tired of the condition our streets are in,” a shopkeeper, who do not wish to be identified, told Review.

“Look at the potholes. We have tried everything, and since February we have sent numerous e-mails and made several phone calls to the municipality to attend to our problem. The street is a safety risk and trying to evade one pothole you may just land in the next one.”

Review saw various taxis and other vehicles struggling to exit and enter the centre’s parking area as they had to manoeuvre around potholes, some of which were dangerously deep.

Taxi owners also complained and showed Review the bubbles in their tyres caused by the potholes. They said they had to replace their tyres once a bubble formed, as the tyre could burst. Some taxis’ tyre rims were also damaged.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality remained committed to ensuring that all the city’s roads were in good condition including those at the Indian Centre. She said a contractor had started with repairs at the centre.

“The area is in a very confined space where there are taxis and commuters moving in or out during week days. This means that the contractor is able to repair the area only on Sundays when there is no heavy traffic,” she said. “There has been some progress recorded, with the repairs to be finished soon.”

Chuene said all roads and stormwater matters could be reported to the following numbers: (015) 290 2095/2372/2457/2458.
