Residents at Atok said that since the Bokoni Platinum Mine started operation, the community have not yet benefitted, despite the company’s pledge to comply with South Africa’s mining charter.

“Now we are demanding answers from the Bokoni Platinum Mine and Community Trust’s failure to reveal how community equitable shares are utilised. The problem is that, the leadership of the mine is undermining us,” they said.

According to the spokesperson for the Limpopo police Col Malesela Ledwaba, protesters have been arrested and charged with public violence and malicious damage to property.

“Six cases of malicious damage to property have been opened,” said Malesela.
