Man in court over plot to kill businessman (55)

A CASE involving a man who allegedly hatched a plot to kill a businessman from Sekororo outside Tzaneen will be heard by the Polokwane regional court in June.

POLOKWANE – A CASE involving a man who allegedly hatched a plot to kill a businessman from Sekororo outside Tzaneen will be heard by the Polokwane regional court in June.

Romeo Thabo Ngoatle from Burgersfort, faces a case of conspiracy to murder 55-year-old Mapone Shai. He appeared before the Mankweng magistrate’s court last Thursday and was granted bail before the case was moved to the Polokwane regional court to be heard on June 11.

In January actions taken by Ngoatle aroused suspicions that he intended to do Shai harm. The police were subsequently contacted and Ngoatle was arrested together with Rax Mametja, who was allegedly hired by Ngoatle to kill Shai. However, the case against Mametja was withdrawn due to lack of evidence.

Shai said he felt he was no longer safe. “I escaped death by the skin of my teeth. Was it not for the mercy of God, I would have been six feet under already,” Shai said.

Polokwane police spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba, confirmed that the case against Mametja had been withdrawn due to lack of evidence and that Ngoatle had been granted bail.
