One person was killed and three injured when angry residents fought with police during a service delivery protest on the R36 road along Nkowankowa Township in Limpopo.

Residents of Sasekani, JB and Muhlava Cross village took to the streets after the Mopani District Municipality reneged on its promise to respond to their demand of  water supply by 6 May.

They barricaded the road with burning tyres, stones and various other objects from Wednesday morning in protest against the lack of clean running water in the area. The protesters said they were tired of sharing dirty water with animals.

According to residents task team leader Ivin Shiridza, residents demand that the district municipality officials come and give them a progress report with regard to addressing their water shortage problem.

Mopani District Municipality spokesperson Neil Shikwambane could not be reached for comment, as his cellphone rang unanswered.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that one person was killed and three injured during the unrest.

On Thursday morning, the road was still barricaded.
