Mayweather vs Pacquiao: was the greatest fight rigged?

In the aftermath of the Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Manny Pacquiao fight, Review asked some residents whether they thought the fight had been fair.

POLOKWANE – The greatest boxing fight of all time took place this past weekend, and with so much interest, hype and money surrounding the fight, most people have an opinion over whether the fight was fair or not.

The purse for the fight was set at $300 million.

The fight between Floyd Mayweather Jnr and Manny Pacquiao took place on Sunday morning, with the fight going the full 12 rounds and the result depending on the judges’ scores. Pacquiao lost the fight, according to all three judges’ scorecards. Mayweather’s win extended his impressive 19-year unbeaten record to 48-0. Mayweather retained his World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association welterweight titles and added Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organisation belt to those he already has.

In the aftermath, Review asked some residents whether they thought the fight had been fair.

Rene Yiangou and Heinrich Wolhüter.

Heinrich Wolhüter said he thought there was way too much many money involved in the fight and this caused Mayweather to hold back just enough so that the match would last the full length and he could get a bigger paycheck in the end. “All that money took away the true competition of the sport and because of that, we will never know who would truly have won.”

Rene Yiangou said she thought the fight was rigged.

Zian Tshabalala.

Zian Tshabalala had a different view of the fight and said he was a Mayweather fan and thought it had been a good, fair fight.

De Wet du Bruyn.

De Wet du Bruyn said he didn’t even want to watch Mayweather fight because Mayweather’s fights were rigged.

Moloko Nsub.

Moloko Nsub had an entirely different opinion. “to me the fight felt like a draw, I don’t know how they score the fighters, but I really thought it would be a draw”.

Danny Sekhaolelo.

Danny Sekhaolelo said he was a huge Mayweather fan, but admitted that he thought Mayweather had held back in order to receive more money for the fight.
