Westenburg’s own hip hop star

POLOKWANE – William Khalo is the talk of the Westenburg neighbourhood after he released his first dance video on Facebook recently.

William is a 23-year-old hip hop dancer from Westenburg. He shot a music video, where he dances to a well known international song, Hookah, which is performed by Tyga featuring Young Thug.

The music video was shot in different parts of Westenburg, with the main scene being in the Westenburg park.

According to William, the reason for his music video was to show the world that Westenburg had talent, and to show the youth that there were opportunities through dance.

William’s love for dance was born at the age of seven years.

“When I was little I use to dance for my family and friends at parties and family gatherings. It was always just for fun and to entertain them, but when I was 16 years old, I decided to take dancing more seriously. We started a group called The Explosive Dance Crew. We danced together for three years, but the crew had to split because some of them had to go to university and others started working. I continued dancing as a solo dancer,” William said.

His role models are American singer, songwriter, dancer and actor, Usher Terry Raymond and American recording artist, dancer and actor, Christopher Maurice ‘Chris’ Brown.

“When I dance it comes from the heart and every move I make is with passion. I believe every move must convey a message to the audience.

“That is why I love Chris and Usher, because I can see that same motto when they dance. Dancing is not just a hobby to me, it is my way of expressing myself and communicating. I am bad with words, but with my art of dance, I can tell a thousand stories,” William said.

He added that his moves were inspired by his surroundings and circumstances.

“I believe that when you create something and perform an art, in my case dance, it must have a positive impact on someone’s life. When I dance I tell a story that another person can relate to and find answers to whichever problems they face or situation they are going through,” William said.

William has won several dance competitions, which include Westenburg’s Got Talent, Thornhill’s Got Talent, and DanceMania.

In 2014 William was part of the Chemical Reaction Dance Crew, and they went to Las Vegas where they competed in the Dance to Las Vegas competition where they ended in the top three. In the same year they also competed in the Dance Stars competition in Croatia and again took a position in the top three winners.

William’s dream is to open his own dance school, where he can teach children with underprivileged backgrounds and give them an opportunity to grow in the dance industry.
