Science expo at Mitchell House

Mitchell House held their annual science fair at the school on Friday.

POLOKWANE – Mitchell House held their annual science fair at the school on Friday.

The purpose of the fair was to develop a passion for science and to encourage critical thinking and the application of scientific methods.

The competition was open to gr. 4 to gr. 7 learners. The learners competed in two categories, junior – gr. 4 and 5, and senior – gr. 6 and 7.

There were 67 groups that entered, which varied between one learner to a maximum of three learners per group.

The participants had to formulate a hypothesis, design an experiment to prove it and draw a sound conclusion.

The learners also had to perform a fair test, to show that their data and observations were accurate.

Participants could choose their own topic, with a focus on uniqueness.

There was a wide variety of experiments which included:

• Edible plastic.

• The effect of age on a learner’s heart rate.

• Identifying patterns of fingerprints.

• Electromagnets.

• Respiration in plants.

• The effect of yeast on different substances, testing the sugar content.

• The effect of different liquids on plant growth, Rooibos tea, water, milk, and energy drinks.

• The power of magnets.

The science fair winners in the junior category:

1. Humayd Dada.

2. Nthahli Nkopane, Nthabiseng Shivambu and Tinaye Muchandigona.

3. Imaan Sonpra.

The science fair winners in the senior category:

1. Husnaa Dada and Qailah Labtib in a tie.

2. Cian Goeminne, Aamenah Moosa and Rayhaan Essa in a three-way tie.

3. Akila Rhandarie.

The top three winners in each category will go on a local science field trip after the exams.
