Treverton Easter Sports Festival: Stanfordians show their mettle

Stanford Lake College's (SLC) first XV rugby team took part in the annual Treverton Easter Sports Festival that took place over the Easter holidays in Mooi River in the Natal Midlands.

HAENERTSBURG – Stanford Lake College’s (SLC) first XV rugby team took part in the annual Treverton Easter Sports Festival that took place over the Easter holidays in Mooi River in the Natal Midlands.

According to Rona McGaffin, SLC marketer, the team had its most successful rugby tour to date.

She added that the SLC XV rugby team faced some tough competition from various schools around the country.

“The boys got off to a great start by playing some exciting running rugby, beating Woodhill College 47-3 in their first game. The following day was much of the same, with Stanford beating Southcity School 25-10,” she said.

She further said the final game was against tour rival, Maragon College, and the game was a much closer and harder fought affair, with both teams giving everything they had to win. The SLC boys never gave up and despite being behind the entire game, managed to be awarded a penalty.

Fly-half, Josh de Goede slotted a fantastic kick under pressure and SLC won the game 6-5 to end off an excellent tour with good results.

The SLC squad consisted of: David Morris, Cules Kloppers, Pieter de Wit (captain), Steve Willson (coach), Conrad Schmidt (vice-captain), Keegan van Jaarsveld, Michael van Zyl, Aidan du Preez, Pierre Smalle, Istifah Kalla, Retabiele Matebatha, Rhanda Mongwe, Junior Mashele, Adam McGaffin, Jason Wright, Edgar Silimela, Thabo Rachidi, Josh de Goede, Dewald Ludick, Austin Johnson, Tristan Baptista, Vusi Muhlari, Bradley Penrose and Ryan Davidson.
