Ads for work at muni, no space

JOB seekers in the Greater Tzaneen municipality expressed their concern over job advertisements in print media, which they said they considered wasteful expenditure.

TZANEEN – JOB seekers in the Greater Tzaneen municipality expressed their concern over job advertisements in print media, which they said they considered wasteful expenditure.

This concern was raised by job seekers who frequently applied for advertised posts placed in newspapers by the municipality that were later withdrawn without any appointments being made.

They said the advertisements were mostly placed in newspapers to which the municipality had to pay thousands of rand.

One job seeker said he had applied for several posts at the municipality since late last year but had learnt from a reliable source that the positions were frozen without any reasons being given.

The source went on to say that senior officials and some politicians ended up withdrawing some posts after they realised that their chosen candidates had not applied. “In this instance the posts may either be frozen or re-advertised to allow favourite candidates an opportunity to apply,” he said.

The source went on to say that the advertisement for the position of director of planning and economic development was withdrawn as there was no municipal manager to appoint the director.

The second batch of job opportunities which were advertised were advertised on the municipal noticeboard. Although the closing date was the end of last month, no interviews had been scheduled yet, the source claimed.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala, said the reason why advertisements were withdrawn or re-advertised was that the applicants were not as well qualified as needed. He denied that some positions were reserved for friends and relatives.
