Keeping city clean is everyone’s responsibility, not just muni’s

THE Polokwane Municipality has called on residents to do their part to keep the city and the surrounding area clean.

POLOKWANE – THE Polokwane Municipality has called on residents to do their part to keep the city and the surrounding area clean.

This followed after CV was contacted by residents around Fluoorspar and Silicon Streets in Ladanna about piles of rubbish dumped in an open field in the area.

A resident, Ronald Monama, said this was becoming a serious challenge as people often dumped the contents of their dustbins anywhere, which made the place look dirty.

“People should not take advantage of municipal workers but everyone should play his or her part in keeping the city clean at all times,” he said.

A municipal worker who was at the open field where the refuse had been dumped, echoed Monama’s words.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality had placed waste bins all over the city and conducted weekly waste removal from residential areas and businesses as well as having waste transfer stations to ensure that the city was kept clean.

She said members of the public must understand that littering and illegal dumping not only affected the cleanliness of the city, but also had a negative impact on the environment.

“Maintaining a clean environment is everybody’s business, residents are therefore urged to dispose of waste in a responsible way. Illegal dumping attracts a fine of between R300 and R1 200,” she warned.

Waste management or illegal dumping should be reported to (015) 290 2366/2367.
