Road users requested to be patient

POLOKWANE – Road users recently expressed their frustration over congestion on the city’s roads, especially at the exit of the city on the road to Louis Trichardt, and the intersection at Munnik Ave and the R81 Modjadjiskloof road.

However, the municipality has given its reassurance that this matter is being looked into in order to resolve traffic congestion.

These problem intersections become extremely congested, especially during peak traffic times early in the morning and late afternoon.

One of the causes for the congestion is that often the traffic light arrow indicators, for people who wish to turn do not work. The problem is exacerbated when impatient drivers disobey the rules of the road and cross.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality remained committed towards safety on the roads. “We urge motorists to observe all road rules and traffic signs whilst also exercising patience and caution at all times,” she said.

“As for the traffic light arrow indicators, the Polokwane Municipality will repair them soon in order to ensure smooth traffic flow,” Chuene further said.

Another intersection where there is often confusion due to motorists not obeying the road rules, is on the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Market Street.

The two lanes on the right are for traffic turning into Market Street only, but some drivers continue straight, with several accidents having occurred already.

“We will be strengthening our traffic law enforcement on the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Market Street as well as other areas of concern,” Chuene concluded.
