Nyaope mix holds residents hostage; destroys lives

SESHEGO – NYAOPE is not only keeping its users hostage in Seshego zone 2, but also the people who live there, who say they are to scared to leave their homes for fear of being attacked and robbed by the youngsters for whom using nyaope has become a way of life.

The deadly mix of dagga, heroin and other chemical substances seems to be fast becoming the drug of choice among the youth of Seshego.

Express recently witnessed a group of young boys in Seshego zone 2 at Zone 2 assembled under a cloud of smoke. Judging from the smell, they were not smoking tobacco.

The woman who pointed them out to Express, said residents in the neighbourhood were afraid of these young addicts because they mugged people in order to be able to afford their drug.

“When I got married to a local man here, I knew these boys as dagga maniacs.

“Now they have graduated to this stuff called nyaope.

“I have heard stories about them; that they commit crimes regularly so that they can buy this drug.

“What scares me most is that they are always gathered next to our house. It is because of them that I cannot go to the shops or anywhere alone for fear of being mugged.

“My husband tells me they dropped out of school at an early stage because they started drinking and smoking while they were still in primary school,” the woman, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, said.

Asked if they knew of the nyoape prevalence in the vicinity, spokesperson for the Seshego police, WO Mothemane Malefo said, “we were not aware of the nyaope problem in this neighbourhood.

“We would like to appeal to anyone with information to contact us.

“From now on, we will intensify our patrols around the affected area.”
